What Do Water Softeners Do? A Water Safety Guide

Where would we be without water?

That’s obviously a rhetorical question. But it does highlight just how vital this substance is to us. Increasing the quality of our water is not a matter of being fussy. It has immense health benefits for you and your household. This is especially true when it comes to tackling hard water.

So, we’re here to help you understand why installing a water softener is one of the best moves you can make for treating your water at home.

So, what do water softeners do? Keep reading to find out.

What Is Hard Water?

Before anything, it’s important to understand what is hard water and why it is undesirable.

Hardwater refers to when your water has a higher than usual mineral content. As it rains, it travels to your home and picks up minerals from rocks and pipes, etc. Depending on the intensity of its journey, it may pick more than the desired insoluble minerals like calcium and magnesium.

This process, which although can’t be seen with the naked eye, makes the quality of your water “hard” and can cause many side effects like blocking your pipes, scratching your glasses, and damaging your hair and skin.

So, how do we wage war against hard water?

Benefits of a Water Softener

To improve the quality of your water, you need to find a way of removing those insoluble minerals from your water. This is a process called “water softening”.

One of the best ways to achieve this is by installing a water softener system for your home. This will ensure that the water that goes through your pipes and out of your tap is, not hard but, soft water.

So how do water softeners work, exactly? I’m glad you asked!

What Do Water Softeners Do?

There are a variety of water softeners out there, each with its own technology. The most common is a process called ion exchange. This water softener system contains two tanks.

The first is called the resin tank containing electrostatically sensitive resin beads. As the hard water passes through the resin tank, the minerals stick to these beads as they release sodium in “exchange” leaving your water softer than a dream!

Once this process is complete the second tank, called the brine tank, comes into play. This flushes out of the minerals obtained in the resin tank by recharging it with sodium ions making it ready to start the process anew.

Which Water Softener Is for Me?

Finding which type of water softener is right for you depends on your water source. A water softener for well water will be slightly different from a system for a household that obtains municipal water. Well water maintenance requires different technology, so do your homework before making a decision.

Own Your Water

We don’t tend to view water as belonging to us. After all, it was here before we were! But water is yours whenever you consume it. So, own it by improving its quality upon use.

Remember; it becomes part of you at the moment that you drink it. It becomes part of your home the moment it flows through its pipes. What it contains at that point is your choice!

So, what do water softeners do? Well, to put it simply: it gives you the water you deserve!
